How To Pump Bicycle Tyre?

Jan 13, 2025

Here are the steps to pump a bicycle tyre:
Prepare the tools: You will need a bicycle pump. There are various types of pumps, such as hand pumps and floor pumps. Make sure the pump is in good working condition and suitable for your bicycle tire. Some pumps come with different nozzles to fit different valve types.

Identify the valve type: There are mainly two bicycle tire valves - Presta and Schrader. Presta valves are thinner and have a small nut on the top, while Schrader valves are similar to those found on car tires and are wider with a removable cap.

Remove the valve cap: Unscrew the valve cap from the valve stem and set it aside. Be careful not to lose it.

Attach the pump: For a Presta valve, you may need to first loosen the small nut on the top of the valve. Then, attach the pump nozzle to the valve stem and secure it tightly. For a Schrader valve, simply push the pump nozzle onto the valve stem until it makes a tight seal.

Pump the tire: Start pumping the tire. If using a hand pump, push and pull the pump handle in a steady rhythm. If it's a floor pump, use your body weight to push down on the pump handle for more power. Keep an eye on the tire pressure. You can use a tire pressure gauge to check the pressure regularly. The recommended tire pressure for your bicycle can usually be found on the sidewall of the tyre or in the bicycle's user manual.

Stop pumping at the right pressure: Once the tire reaches the recommended pressure, stop pumping. Over-inflating the tyre can cause it to burst, while under-inflating can affect the bicycle's performance and handling.

Detach the pump: Carefully detach the pump nozzle from the valve. For a Presta valve, remember to tighten the small nut on top of the valve after detaching the pump.

Replace the valve cap: Screw the valve cap back onto the valve stem to protect the valve from dirt and damage.

Finally, give the tire a visual check to make sure it looks properly inflated and there are no signs of leaks or other problems.
