How To Repair A Bicycle Tyre?

Apr 24, 2025

The methods of repairing bicycle tires vary depending on the type of tire and the damage. The following mainly introduces common inner tube repair methods and simple outer tube repair methods:

Inner tube repair

1. Remove the tire: Use a wrench to loosen the axle nut and remove the tire. If it is a quick-release device, open the quick release.
2. Remove the inner tube: Use a tire lever to carefully pry the outer tube from the rim and remove the inner tube from the outer tube. Be careful not to scratch the inner tube.
3. Find the leak: After inflating the inner tube, put it in water and observe the position where the bubbles emerge, or use your ears and hands to touch to determine the leak, and mark it with a marker.
4. Grind the leak: Use a file or sandpaper to roughen the surface of the inner tube around the leak, and the area should be slightly larger than the patch.
5. Apply glue: Apply tire repair glue evenly on the polished area, not too much, and wait for a few minutes until the glue becomes sticky.
6. Paste the patch: Align the center of the patch with the leak and press hard, squeeze out the air from the center to the surrounding area, and ensure that the patch fits tightly with the inner tube.
7. Reinstall the inner tube and outer tube: Place the repaired inner tube flatly into the outer tube, and then install the outer tube back on the rim. Be careful not to clamp the inner tube during installation.
8. Inflation check: Install the tire back on the bicycle, and check whether the repaired part is leaking after inflation, and check whether the air pressure is appropriate.

Outer tire repair

1. Cleaning the wound: If the outer tire has a small tear or nail, first remove the foreign object, clean the dust and debris around the wound with clean water or a wet cloth, and then wipe it dry with a clean towel.
2. Filling the wound: For smaller tears, you can use tire repair strips or tire repair agents to fill. Insert the rubber strip into the tear and compact it with a tool; if you use a repair agent, inject it into the tear according to the instructions.
3. Reinforcement treatment: If the tear is large, you can cut a piece of rubber sheet of similar size to the tear, glue it to the inside of the tear with glue, and then stick a layer of wear-resistant tape on the outside, such as electrical tape or special tire repair tape, to enhance the strength of the repair.

If the outer tire is severely damaged, such as a large tear, broken cord, etc., it is recommended to replace the outer tire to ensure riding safety.
