How To Replace A Bicycle Inner Tube?

Jan 30, 2025

Here are the steps to replace a bicycle inner tube:

Prepare tools and materials: You will need a new inner tube that matches the size of your bicycle tire, a pair of tyre levers, and a pump.

Remove the wheel: Use a wrench to loosen the axle nuts and take the wheel off the bicycle.

Deflate the tire: Open the valve on the inner tube and let all the air out.

Remove the tyre from the rim: Insert a tire lever between the tyre and the rim at the valve stem. Pry the tyre bead up and over the rim edge. Use a second lever to continue prying the tire off the rim, working around the wheel until one side of the tyre is completely off the rim. Then, pull the inner tube out through the opening.

Inspect the tyre and rim: Check the inside of the tyre for any sharp objects, such as thorns or glass, that might have caused the inner tube to puncture. Also, examine the rim for any rough spots or burrs that could damage the new inner tube. Remove any debris and smooth out any rough areas.

Install the new inner tube: Inflate the new inner tube slightly to give it some shape. Insert the valve stem through the hole in the rim and then carefully feed the rest of the inner tube into the tire. Make sure the inner tube is not twisted or pinched.

Put the tire back on the rim: Start by fitting one side of the tire bead back onto the rim. Use your hands to push the tire onto the rim as much as possible. Then, use the tire levers to help pull the other side of the tire onto the rim. Be careful not to pinch the inner tube between the tire and the rim. Work around the wheel until the entire tire is back on the rim.

Inflate the tire: Use a pump to inflate the tire to the recommended pressure. Check the tire for any bulges or signs of the inner tube being pinched. If everything looks good, continue inflating the tire to the proper pressure.

Reinstall the wheel: Put the wheel back on the bicycle and tighten the axle nuts. Make sure the wheel is properly aligned and spins freely.

Finally, double-check the tyre pressure before you start riding to ensure a safe and comfortable ride.
