What Are The Two Types Of Bicycle Valves?

Feb 27, 2025

The two main types of bicycle valves are Presta valves and Schrader valves. Here is a detailed introduction:

Presta Valve: Also known as the French valve, it is mainly used on road bikes. This valve consists of a brass tube body with external threads, a valve screw, a valve cap, and a nut that fixes the valve to the rim. The Presta valve is thin and long, suitable for narrow rims, and has excellent airtightness at low and high pressures, which is suitable for the high-pressure tires of road bikes. It is more professional and is often used on more professional sports bicycles.

Schrader Valve: Also known as the American valve, it is widely used on various motor vehicle tires and is also common on mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, and some entry-level bikes. The Schrader valve has a wider and thicker stem with a larger diameter, similar to the valve on a car tire. There is a spring-loaded valve core inside. When the air pump is connected, the valve core is pushed open to let air into the tire. After the pump is removed, the spring-loaded valve core automatically closes to prevent air from escaping. It is easy to inflate and deflate, and it is more convenient to use with common air pumps.
