To Clean Your Bike Tyres

Aug 27, 2024

1. Assemble your equipment

Before you get started, make sure you have all the necessary cleaning equipment. This includes: rags, washing up liquid or bike cleaner, a sponge and a big and small brush.

2. Wash off loose grime with a hose

If you have one, prop your bike on a bike stand. This will make it easier to reach each part of the tyre. If you don't have one, turning your bike upside down will be just fine.

Next, take a high-pressure garden hose across the wheel to remove all the loose grime/mud. While using the hose, be careful not to use it on places like the headset, brake pads, hubs, bottom brackets etc. If you don't have a hose available, you can use a big nylon bristle brush to clean off the grime.

3. Lather up bike cleaner

Now you have removed all of the grime and mud, it's time for the deep clean. To clean the bike, you can use a number of solutions. The easy option is a pre-made bike solution, but you can also make a household cleaner of baking soda and warm water or a cleaning solution of white vinegar and warm water.

Spray your cleaning solution all over the tyres, making sure you get between the tread and the inner sidewall. Let the solution sit and absorb for around 5 minutes, so the grease becomes wet and easily washes off.

Next, dip a big nylon bristle scrubbing brush in the solution and scrub the tyre with it. Make sure you get a good lather across the tyre to ensure no areas are missed. At this step you have to be a little careful of the valve – avoid bending it and cover it with a dust cap for better protection. It will ensure no dirt or mud inside.

We recommend using an old toothbrush to get to the places that are harder to reach and clean. Repeat the same process with the rear wheel.

4. Rinse off with warm water

Once you have finished scrubbing, rinse your tyres with warm water. Now the grime is removed, wipe off the tyres properly with the help of a damp sponge or rag. Keep doing this until all the tires are thoroughly cleaned. Rinse once again with warm water.

5. Dry the tyres

Finally, take a dry rag and wipe the tyres until they are dry. Ensure the tires are completely dry because if tyres are left wet for a long period of time, mould can attack them. Wipe away the sidewalls and rim as well.
