Bicycle Tyre Valve Types

Dec 05, 2024

There are two main types of bicycle tyre valves: Presta and Schrader.

1. Presta Valves
Structure and Appearance:
Presta valves are long, thin valves that are typically made of metal. They have a narrow stem with a small diameter. At the top of the valve, there is a locking nut. The valve core is recessed inside the valve stem and is not as exposed as in the Schrader valve.
The overall length of a Presta valve can vary, but it's usually longer than a Schrader valve to accommodate different rim and tyre designs.

Function and Use:
Presta valves are often used on high - performance bicycles such as road bikes and some high - end mountain bikes. They can hold higher pressures more effectively than Schrader valves. For example, a road bike tyre might be inflated to pressures of 80 - 130 psi (pounds per square inch), and the Presta valve design is well - suited for this.
To use a Presta valve, you first need to unscrew the locking nut at the top. This allows air to flow in and out of the valve. When inflating, you attach the pump head to the valve and make sure it's a snug fit. After inflating, you screw the locking nut back on to keep air from escaping and to protect the valve core.

Advantages:
The ability to hold high pressures makes them ideal for tyres that require a firm and less - cushioned inflation, like road bike tyres. They also have a relatively small profile, which can provide a more aerodynamic design and take up less space on the rim.

2. Schrader Valves
Structure and Appearance:
Schrader valves look similar to the valves on car tyres. They have a wider stem compared to Presta valves. The valve core is more exposed and is located at the end of the valve stem. There is a small rubber seal around the base of the valve to prevent air from leaking out of the rim.

Function and Use:
Schrader valves are very common and are used on a wide variety of bicycles, including many mountain bikes, BMX bikes, and some city or hybrid bikes. They are designed to work well with lower to moderate pressure ranges, such as 30 - 50 psi for mountain bike tyres.
To use a Schrader valve, you simply push the pump head onto the valve. The pump head usually has a mechanism that will depress the valve core and allow air to flow into the tyre. There's no need to unscrew any locking nuts as with the Presta valve.

Advantages:
They are very easy to use and familiar to most people because of their similarity to car tyre valves. They are also more robust and less likely to be damaged during normal use. The wider valve stem can make it easier to attach some types of pumps, especially those that are designed to work with both bicycle and car tyres.
