How to maintain butyl bicycle tubes pressure

Oct 24, 2024

When using butyl bicycle tubes, you can maintain proper tire pressure by:

1. Know the Correct Pressure Range
Check your bike's manual or the markings on the side of the tire to find out the correct pressure range for your bike. The recommended tire pressure varies for different types of bikes and different tire sizes.

In general, road bikes are usually set at higher pressures, ranging from 80-120 psi (pounds per square inch); mountain bikes are set at lower pressures, ranging from 30-60 psi.

2. Use a High-Quality Tire Pressure Gauge
Invest in an accurate and reliable tire pressure gauge. Cheap tire pressure gauges may be inaccurate, causing you to be unable to correctly judge whether the inner tube has the right pressure. When measuring tire pressure, make sure the tire pressure gauge is tightly connected to the valve to get an accurate reading.

3. Check tire pressure regularly
Make a habit of checking tire pressure regularly, especially before long rides, when the temperature changes greatly, or after a period of not using the bike. You can check tire pressure every week or every two weeks to ensure that the inner tube is always within the proper pressure range.

4. Adjust tire pressure considering riding conditions
Different riding conditions require different tire pressures. For example, when riding on a flat road, you can keep a higher tire pressure to reduce rolling resistance and increase riding speed; when riding on a rugged mountain or muddy road, you can appropriately reduce the tire pressure to increase the tire's contact area with the ground and improve grip and stability. If you are carrying a heavier load or riding a double, you can also increase the tire pressure appropriately to support the extra weight.

5. Inflate correctly
Use a suitable pump to inflate the inner tube. Both manual and electric pumps are fine, but make sure it can reach the required tire pressure range. During the inflation process, increase the air pressure slowly while observing the tire pressure gauge reading. Do not over-inflate to avoid exceeding the recommended tire pressure range, which increases the risk of inner tube bursting.
After inflation, gently press the tire with your hand to check whether the tire pressure is uniform. If a certain part feels soft or hard, there may be a problem with the inner tube or uneven tire pressure, which requires further inspection and adjustment.

By following the above methods, you can maintain proper tire pressure when using butyl bicycle inner tubes, improving the safety, comfort and performance of your riding.
