How to judge whether the road bicycle tyre needs to be replaced

Oct 28, 2024

You can judge whether the road bicycle tyre needs to be replaced from the following aspects:
1. Observe the degree of wear
Check the tread depth: The tread depth of the road bicycle tyre will gradually become shallower with use. When the tread depth is less than 1.5 mm, the grip of the tire will be significantly reduced, especially on wet or muddy roads, it is easy to slip. At this time, you should consider replacing the tire.
Check the uniformity of tread wear: If some parts of the tire are particularly worn, while other parts are relatively good, this may be caused by improper wheel installation, incorrect riding posture, or frequent riding under specific road conditions. Uneven wear will affect the stability and safety of riding, and the tire may also need to be replaced.

2. Check tire damage
Check for cuts and cracks: During riding, the tire may be cut by sharp objects or cracked due to aging. If the tire is found to have deep cuts or long cracks, especially cracks that run through the entire tire, this will greatly reduce the strength and safety of the tire and must be replaced immediately.
Check for bulges: Bulges are usually caused by damage to the inner cord layer of the tire. If a bulge is found on the tire, it means that the structure of the tire has been damaged and a blowout may occur at any time, so it must be replaced immediately.

3. Consider the use time and mileage
Generally speaking, the service life of a road bicycle tyre is about 1,500 kilometers to 3,000 kilometers, depending on factors such as the quality of the tire, the riding environment, and personal riding habits. If your tire has been used for a long time or the riding mileage is close to this range, even if the surface of the tire looks relatively intact, you should consider replacing the tire to ensure riding safety.
Over time, the rubber of the tire will gradually age, and its performance will decline even if there is no obvious wear and damage. If your bicycle has been placed for a long time without use, it is best to check the condition of the tire before using it again, and replace it in time if necessary.

4. Pay attention to changes in riding experience
If you feel that the handling of the bicycle has deteriorated during riding, such as instability when turning, longer braking distance, etc., this may be caused by severe wear of the tire or other problems. At this time, you should check the condition of the tire to determine whether it needs to be replaced.
When the tire is worn, rolling resistance increases and riding becomes more strenuous. If you find yourself needing to exert more effort to maintain the same speed under the same road conditions, this may also be a sign that the tire needs to be replaced.
