How To Change A Bicycle Tube?

Mar 31, 2025

Replacing a bicycle inner tube can generally be done in the following steps:

1. Prepare tools: You need to prepare a suitable new inner tube, tire levers (2-3), an air pump, and a pair of gloves to protect your hands.
2. Remove the wheel: Use a wrench to loosen the nuts at both ends of the bicycle axle and remove the wheel from the frame. If it is a quick-release wheel, simply open the quick-release device to remove the wheel.
3. Deflate the tire: Find the valve stem, unscrew the valve core, and completely release the air in the tire.
4. Pry off the tire: Insert the tire lever between the tire and the rim, and gently pry to separate the edge of the tire from the rim. To prevent damage to the rim and inner tube, start prying from the position opposite the valve stem. After inserting the first pry bar, insert the second pry bar near it, and pry the two pry bars alternately to gradually pry the edge of the tire out of the rim. Be careful not to let the pry bar scratch the inner tube.
5. Remove the old inner tube: After prying the edge of the tire along the rim for a sufficient distance, the old inner tube can be removed from the tire. Be careful when removing it to prevent the inner tube from being scratched by sharp objects on the rim or tire.
6. Check the tire and rim: Check carefully whether there are foreign objects inside the tire, such as small stones, glass fragments, etc. If there are any, clean them up. At the same time, check whether the rim is deformed, burred, or otherwise damaged. If there is a problem with the rim, repair or replace the rim first to prevent the new inner tube from being damaged again.
7. Install the new inner tube: Gently put the new inner tube into the tire, and make sure that the valve is aligned with the valve hole on the rim. First, insert the valve into the valve hole, and then slowly put the rest of the inner tube into the gap between the tire and the rim. During the process, make sure that the inner tube is flat and not twisted or folded.
8. Install the tire: Align the edge of the tire with the rim, starting from the valve, and gradually press the edge of the tire back to the rim. You can first install the edge of the tire on one side completely on the rim, and then install the other side. During the installation process, if you encounter difficulties, you can use a pry bar to assist, but be careful not to pry the inner tube.
9. Inflate: Tighten the valve core and use a pump to inflate the tire. When inflating, pay attention to the shape of the tire to ensure that the tire expands evenly without any deviation or partial bulging. At the same time, inflate the tire to the appropriate pressure according to the pressure range marked on the tire.
10. Install the wheel: Install the inflated wheel back on the bicycle frame, tighten the axle nut, or fasten the quick release device.
11. Check: Finally, check whether the tire pressure is appropriate, whether the wheel rotates smoothly, and whether the brakes are normal. If there is any problem, make adjustments in time.
